Advent: PEACE / PAZ

Sure Foundation is preparing for Christmas with the installation of Advent "candles" - one at a time, each Sunday - in our front windows. The fourth candle, PEACE / PAZ, is just one candle away from Christmas!

Everybody needs a little bit of Peace.

This is the neat thing about our church - so much going on inside, and so many things going on outside.

This Christmas: God’s Love - Unstoppable

We have great respect for people who have a dogged determination, who set their minds to accomplish something great and won't allow anyone or anything get in their way. Yet, even the most unwavering grit and fortitude we see depicted in the heroes on the movie screen pales in comparison to the resolve God has to love us and rescue us from our sin.

We see this resolve in the manger on Christmas Eve, as the Creator of heaven and earth, determined to free this world from its slavery to sin, takes on human flesh and blood and enters the world he created. Yet, Satan was also determined—to counter God's plan in any and every way possible. And it's in this all out battle of the wills that we clearly see who truly is the greatest. In the end, absolutely nothing is going to be able to stop God's love.

Join us at Sure Foundation on Sunday mornings at 9:30 for:
God's Love—Unstoppable
December 19th: A Miraculous Sign for the Unbelieving Heart
(Isaiah 7:1-17)
December 26th: A Miraculous Escape Ensuring Our Release

January 2nd: A Miraculous Choice Made Before the Dawn of Time
(Eph. 1:3-14)

Advent: JOY / GOZO

Sure Foundation is preparing for Christmas with the installation of Advent "candles" - one at a time, each Sunday - in our front windows. The third candle, JOY / GOZO, marks the middle of the Advent season and now shines in the windows.

(If you look closely, you can see folks gathered for church in the Sanctuary.)

Rileigh, Maddy, Kenzie and Katie Olson peek through the pink candle.

Charis Carmichael Braun paints "JOY" in the flame and the Spanish word for joy, "GOZO", as the halo.

Advent: LOVE / AMOR

Sure Foundation is preparing for Christmas with the installation of Advent "candles" - one at a time, each Sunday - in our front windows. The second candle, LOVE / AMOR shines.

The candles are made from transparent gels for theater lights. (With so many theaters in NYC, it was a fitting choice!) The words representing the meaning of each Advent candle are painted in both English and Spanish to be the "flame" and "halo." The transparent candles are resting on a "garland" of "pine boughs" cut from painted paper, set along the bottom of the windows.

Warming Hearts at our House Warming

As a kid, I used to participate in a program called "Warm Hearts, Cold Noses." The program was all about bringing a little warmth into the life of a shut-in or a sick person. I would go and visit the elderly or the sick with my dog, Lady. Thus the WARM HEARTS were the sick, the elderly, and even my heart. The COLD NOSE was my dog Lady who also enjoyed the visit.

As a pastor, I participated in Sure Foundation Lutheran Church's house warming event on December 12th, 2009. As our church looks at our surrounding community we see a place that can sometimes be very cold. Perhaps we could say that Woodside, Queens is especially cold during the month of December. The homeless are cold without scarves and are hungry without food. Families miss their dad because he is a soldier fighting in a foreign land. Kids lie sick in the hospital and would love a simple game to play.

This past Saturday, Sure Foundation brought a little warmth into the community by knitting hats for babies, making scarves for the cold, making cards for soldiers, and more! We hope that in this way our community will have a more merry Christmas.

Even more than bringing warmth to people's hearts, we want to bring warmth to people's souls during the Christmas season. Our house warming was much more than a social action event. It was an event to share our faith with our friends and community. At Sure Foundation, we have the warmth of the Christ-child rooted deeply in our hearts. His salvation and his peace warm our hearts and make us in turn want to warm the hearts of others.

The house warming wasn't just a one time event for Sure Foundation. It is Christmas event, a Sunday event, and even an every day event at Sure Foundation.

Here are more special house warming events this Christmas season:

December 24, 2009 at 6:30pm: Christmas Eve Service by Candlelight
December 25, 2009 at 10:30pm: Christmas Day Service
December 31, 2009 at 6:30pm: New Years Eve Service
