5th Annual Amazing Race

Join us for the 5th annual SFLC Amazing Race.  Test your knowledge of NYC as you race in a friendly competition to see who will outsmart their competition to claim the top prize.  In order to complete this, the teams are required to decipher clues and conquer challenges that eventually led to the next destination and ultimately to the finish line. This year’s theme is “Don’t be Square?”

In an effort to defray costs, each person is required to pay a $5 entry fee and in return will get a T-shirt that they are required to wear during the race.  Ice cream is provided once the race is over.  So grab a friend and sign up today to partake in some fun and fellowship with SFLC members and friends.  We also are asking for volunteers to hand out clues and babysit.  For additional information, questions or to help out, please contact Amanda Bourman.

New York City keeps the members of this congregation busy with life.  Some of the members of Sure Foundation have mentioned that this is one of the reasons they don’t pray as often as they would like.  Following the theme of the year “Go on to Maturity”, this Bible study will revitalize the prayer life of the members of this congregation to reflect their spiritual maturity.  As we study the biblical principles of prayer we will take time to consider practical prayer advice for the individual, couple, and family.  Please join us Sunday mornings from April 7^th – May 5^th as we gain a higher appreciation for prayer so that not even the busyness of life will keep us from vital conversation with our God.

Cuando Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos el Domingo de la Pascua, la tierra tembló y la piedra fue removida, per la resurrección de Jesús mueve mucho más que piedras.  Jesús desea moverte a ti y a mí de donde estamos ahora mismo a una compresión más profunda, más clara de su amor y gracia, a un deseo más apasionada de vivir la nueva vida que Él ha ganado para nosotros.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the Christian’s 40 day journey with the Lord to the cross and tomb, preparing for the proclaimation of Easter. The 40 days are reminiscent of several biblical events: Jesus’ 40 day fast at the beginning of his ministry, Moses’ stay on Mount Sinai at the giving of the Law, and Elijah’s fast on his way to the mountain of God.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian’s journey with a reminder of our mortality and a call to repentance. The ancient practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful gives Ash Wednesday its name. The church father Tertullian writes of the practice as a public expression of repentance and our human frailty that stands in need of Christ. The ashes remind us forcefully of our need for redeeming grace as they recall the words from the rite for Christian burial: “...earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust…” words that will someday be spoken over us. The imposition of ashes has never been exclusively a Roman Catholic practice and today is observed widely by many Christian traditions.

Miércoles de Ceniza marca el inicio de la Cuaresma, el viaje cristiano de 40 dias hacia la cruz y sepulcro de Jesus en preparacion para la pascua. Los 40 días son una reminiscencia de varios eventos bíblicos: los 40 días de ayuno de Jesus durante su ministerio, los 40 dias de Moisés en el monte Sinaí, y tambien el ayuno de Elías en su camino a la montaña de Dios.
Miércoles de Ceniza marca el comienzo del viaje cristiano con un recordatorio de nuestra mortalidad y una llamada al arrepentimiento. La antigua práctica de la imposición de ceniza en la frente de los fieles el Miércoles de Ceniza ha dado al dia su nombre. Tertuliano escribe acerca de la práctica como una expresión pública de arrepentimiento y nuestra flaqueza humana, que tiene la necesidad de Cristo. Las cenizas nos recuerdan de nuestra necesidad de la gracia redentora y la palabras nos recuerden del rito de la sepultura cristiana: "... polvo al polvo, ceniza a ceniza ..." palabras que algún día se hablaran sobre nosotros. La imposición de la ceniza no ha sido exclusivamente una práctica católica romana y hoy en día se observa ampliamente por muchas tradiciones cristianas.

Rebobinando el Apocalipsis

Los Domingos a las 11:30am

Lleno de historias de dragones y guerra sobrenatural, visiones siniestras que representan catástrofe en todo el mundo y la muerte en una escala sin precedentes, ningún libro de la Biblia es más misterioso o más debatido que el libro de Apocalipsis.

Muchas personas encuentran que el libro de Apocalipsis es aterrador e incomprensible, cuando, en realidad, Dios le dio a Juan estas visiones extraordinarias para llevar consuelo y paz a los hombres al experimentar el viaje durante los últimos días. Sin embargo, sólo cuando recordamos que todas estas visiones misteriosas conducen a alguna parte (a algún lugar increíble!) Es que comenzamos a comprender la comodidad que el libro de Apocalipsis nos da.

Filled with stories of dragons and supernatural warfare, ominous visions depicting worldwide catastrophe and death on an unparalleled scale, no book of the Bible is more mysterious or more debated than the book of Revelation.

Many people find the book of Revelation frightening and incomprehensible, when, really, God gave John these extraordinary visions to bring comfort and peace to his people as we live out the journey in these last days. Yet, it’s only when we remember that all these mysterious visions lead somewhere (somewhere amazing!) that we begin to comprehend the comfort the book of Revelation holds out to us.

To help us gain a better understanding of this precious gem of scripture we’re going to spend some time this fall exploring the main themes of Revelation. As we do so, we’re going to start at the end (the place where all these visions lead) and rewind back to the beginning.

New English Teacher: Gabriela Mirabal

In December of 2011, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church was chosen among other applicants to receive special funding from WELS Kingdom Workers.  The grant will be used to fund the position of English Administrator/Teacher at Sure Foundation.  

Kristy Goodman and Edili Pichardo temporarily filled this roll. Starting in September, Sure Foundation has asked Gabriela Mirabal to permanently serve as our English teacher. She will be installed on September 9th during worship services.

Gabriela shares her thoughts, "First of all I would like to express my gratitude to Sure Foundation and WELS for giving me the great opportunity to teach English.  One of my biggest desires was to help out the community and give them that confidence that, there's somebody that understands the struggle in learning a new language.


I was born and raised in Mendoza, Argentina and moved to the United States with my parents at the age of 12, I moved to a different world, away from family and friends. Learning English was difficult, but with effort and dedication anything is possible. I'm now in my second year of college and I’m eager to keep learning. 


 I’m very thrilled about starting this new cycle and meeting all of you. I hope we can make the most out of this opportunity and learn together with the help of God."

En diciembre de 2011, La Iglesia Sure Foundation fue elegida entre otras para recibir una donación para seguir y ampliar nuestro programa de inglés.  La donación se utilizará para financiar la posición de administrador/profesor de inglés en Sure Foundation.

Gabriela nos dice, "En primer lugar me gustaría expresar mi gratitud a Sure Foundation y WELS por darme esta gran oportunidad de enseñar Inglés. Uno de mis mayores deseos era el de ayudar a la comunidad y darles la confianza de que, hay alguien que entiende el esfuerzo que requiere aprender un nuevo idioma.

La gente anhela unirse con Dios de modos significativos y profundos. Algunas personas hacen perigrinaciones como si Dios estuviera lejos.  Otros tratan de unirse con Dios a través de ayuno o meditación extrema como si Dios existiera en otra parte de nuestra realidad. Connecting with God

People are yearning to connect with God in meaningful and deep ways.  Some people make pilgrimages as if God were far away.  Others try to connect with God through fasting or extreme meditation as if God exists on some other plane of reality.  God is not far away and he doesn’t exist only in some other plane of reality.  Connecting with God is as simple as reading the Bible, being baptized, and participating in the Lord’s Supper.  We connect with God through his means of grace.
