New Administrator / Teacher for ESL Program

In December of 2011, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church was chosen among other applicants to receive special funding from WELS Kingdom Workers. The grant will be used to fund the new position of English Administrator/Teacher at Sure Foundation.

Sure Foundation has chosen Kristy Goodman to fill the new ministry role. She begins working among us immediately. Kristy Goodman has extensive experience in teaching English both overseas and in the United States. She is currently studying at Columbia University to receive a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

We welcome Kristy to our ministry team and ask God to bless her efforts among us.

The Bible tells us:

It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)

So this holiday season, let us work together with our God given talents to give to those in need. By writing a message of hope to someone who suffers, creating a colorful ornament to brighten a lonely room, building a sandwich to fill a hungry stomach, or loom knitting a hat to warm an infant, we will be reaching out to some of those in the community that need us, and the Gospel, most. In the spirit of giving, we will also be collecting new pairs of socks to donate to area homeless.

This Thanksgiving season, we give thanks to God, our Savior, for our abundance by sharing some of God's gifts with others. Consider joining with Sure Foundation and Action against Hunger to thank God by giving a gift to fight hunger.

Sharing our Reformation Heritage in Tongues

On October 30, 2011, Sure Foundation celebrated the Festival of the Lutheran Reformation, but this was no ordinary Festival of the Lutheran Reformation. We sang "A mighty Fortress" in English and Spanish. The first lesson was read in Mandarin, the second lesson in Spanish, and the gospel lesson in Urdu. Even the sermon was preached in two languages at once. (Listen to it now!)

Here are some more Reformation highlights:

Nine new people were accepted into membership at Sure Foundation Lutheran Church.
Two Mandarin speakers (Daniel and Miriam) and two Spanish speakers (Gisela from Peru and Jenny from Ecuador) were confirmed in their Christian faith for the first time (pictured below).
A group of Urdu speakers led by Pastor Manzoor Alam also joined us for the day (pictured below). This group of Urdu speakers is currently studying what the Bible and Lutherans teach. They are looking to join Sure Foundation in the future. Pastor Manzoor Alam has also begun his studies at our PSI program.

We are well on our way to reaching the world with the gospel in their heart-language. Do you know what languages have the most native speakers in the world? You guessed it! The answer is Mandarin, Spanish, English and Urdu in that order. We have members at Sure Foundation who speak all of these languages and want to share the gospel with their friends. With just these languages, we can reach billions of people with the gospel.

May God keep us faithful to his Word and faithful in Gospel proclamation to all nations!

Reformation Day Festival

At 10:30am on October 30, 2011, Sure Foundation will thank God for the Lutheran Reformation in a multilingual festival service. There will be special music and several adults will be confirmed in their faith.

At 6pm on the same day, Sure Foundation will celebrate the Reformation in a prayer service format called Taize. More on Taize worship.

***The 9:30am service and 11:30am service will not take place. However, the 6pm evening service will take place.***

A New "Ceil"ing

As part of Sure Foundation’s ongoing pursuit to create beautiful spaces in joyful praise to God, the Leadership Team is happy to announce that our sanctuary will be getting a mural on the ceiling to enhance our worship experience. The "Ceil" mural, which will appear as though the sanctuary opens to the sky, is a component of the original design for the sanctuary. ("El Cielo" is the Spanish word for sky.)

During the initial planning for Sure Foundation's spaces in Queens, members commented about how they wanted to feel "refreshed" and "inspired" when they came to worship. The mural will enliven the intimate space and make it feel more open. One of our members, artist Charis Carmichael Braun, will be creating the mural in Fall 2011. Please invite your friends to see this exciting project come to life!

New Sunday Night Worship Opportunity!

Starting Sunday, October 2nd, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church will offer a second worship opportunity every Sunday in English at 6:00pm.

Last October, we celebrated Sure Foundation's 10th Anniversary
and unveiled our special "Fellowship Mosaic." Guest preacher
Aaron Robinson led the service - with a packed house!

For the past 5 months Sure Foundation has been blessed to be averaging around 50 worshippers for the 9:30am Sunday worship service. With only 55 chairs that can be quite congested. We also pray that this additional time will provide another opportunity for those to attend whose schedules don’t always permit Sunday morning attendance. Our hope also is that this worship time will be more “inviter” friendly. 9:30am on a Sunday can simply be too early for some people. Please invite your friends, tell your neighbors and join us on Sundays either at 9:30am or 6:00pm starting on October 2nd.

A SERVICE OF REMEMBERANCE ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

September 11, 2001 changed the world. But how? Did September 11, 2001 change the world into a place of hate, fear, and revenge? Did the day so overcome us with anger that we hate simply because of skin color, creed, or nationality? Is this the true legacy of September 11, 2001? It cannot be.

It is true that September 11, 2001 forever changed the world that we live in. But let’s not allow other people to decide how September 11, 2001 changed the world. Let’s decide again today that September 11, 2001 was a day that taught us about true sacrifice and service. Let’s decide today that September 11, 2001 was a day that taught us about true greatness.

On the 10^th Anniversary of the attacks, Sure Foundation reflected on Jesus’ words in Mark 10:42-45 in a service of remembrance. There Jesus teaches us about true sacrifice, true service, and true greatness. We see those same values in the men and women who responded to the attacks on 9/11. These are the same values we want to instill in ourselves and in our children.

There were two moments of silence during the service. The moments of silence took place 10 years to the minute of when each of the World Trade Center Towers fell. We used those moments to reflect on both the true sacrifice and the true greatness that we see in Jesus, in the heroes of 9/11, and how we want to reflect that in our own lives.

Over 50 visitors attended the emotional worship service and commemoration. The commemoration included a worship service, a presentation of an art piece entitled “The Hand that Rescues” from local Artist Geoff Lupo to FDNY’s Jason Alonte, and a Question and Answer session with Jason Alonte about life in New York City’s Fire Department.

This year’s Labor Day Retreat was another chance for us to enjoy nature and even more importantly renew our spirit in God’s Word and Christian fellowship. Antonia Rodriguez shares her experience. There is a translation below.

“El Pastor Tim me pregunto si podía escribir acerca de mi experiencia durante el pasado fin de semana en el retiro espiritual a las montañas de Massachusetts; pues les diré que este fue mi segundo viaje al retiro y doy gracias a Dios porque pude realizar una inolvidable caminata a la montaña compartiendo salmos, alabanzas y el sermón a cargo del Pastor Gary Kluball, a unos 1640 pies de altura; recordando la grandeza de nuestro Dios el cual nos proporciona todo lo necesario para nuestra existencia aquí en la tierra.

En estos últimos años mi vida ha dado un giro de 190*. Mientras, solo he pedido a Dios me dé la fortaleza y sabiduría para adaptarme a los cambios y convertir los obstáculos en oportunidades; y podría decir con toda certeza, que me he mantenido de pie gracias a su soporte; por lo que me sentí muy honrada al tener la oportunidad de ofrecer un Estudio Bíblico para mujeres sobre el Estrés: Éramos 29 personas, un grupo multicultural y muy participativo, ellas pudieron evaluar su nivel de estrés para luego conocer la procedencia y la cura de este; a través de la Biblia, cuan maravilloso es Dios y sus enseñanzas.”

Pastor Tim asked me if I would write about my experience this past weekend at the Labor Day Retreat in the mountains of Massachusetts. Well, I will tell you that this was my second trip to the retreat and I give thanks to God because I went on an unforgettable walk in the mountains singing psalms, hymns, and listening to a sermon by Pastor Gary Kluball at 1640 feet, remembering the greatness of our God who gave us all that we need for our time in the earth.

In these last years my life has turned around 180 degrees. Through it all, I have asked God to give me strength and wisdom to change myself and let the obstacles become opportunities. I can say with all certainty that I have kept going with God’s help. I also felt very honored to give a Bible study for women about stress. There were 29 people, a very multicultural group that was willing to participate. The women were able to evaluate their level of stress, discuss where it comes from, and also find the cure to the stress through the Bible. God’s teachings are truly marvelous.

Bake Sale to support Christian Education!

This year once again, we will hold a bake sale to help support Christian Education. One of our teens is staring her sophomore year at Luther Preparatory School in Watertown, WI. The money received from the bake sale will be used to pay her tuition costs. The bake sale will be held on August 14, 2011 during the English and Spanish Bible study hour. If you want to contribute in any way, please speak with our pastors.

UPDATE: THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE BAKE SALE. GOOD CAKES AND CHRISTIAN GENEROSITY WON THE DAY. OVER $3,800 WERE DONATED.

Sure Foundation Lutheran Church held our annual Art in the Park series in Hart Park, Woodside, Queens on July 2, and 5-6 at 6:30pm.

The goal of the program is to bring the hope we have in Jesus to our community. With the perfect weather this year, hundreds of smiling faces listened to Bible stories, threw water balloons, and, of course, made art in Hart Park. Sure Foundation partnered with the youth group from Trinity Lutheran Church in Brillion, WI.

Celebrate Unity in Diversity

I now know a little bit better what heaven will be like.

In Saint John's Revelation, he is a bit repetitive about it, but for good reason. He liked to describe the people in heaven in this way, "...there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language...(Rev. 7:9).

That is why I say that now I know a little bit better what heaven will be like. On Sunday, as one Christian family at Sure Foundation, we worshipped the Lamb. We worshipped him in English, Spanish, Creole, Chinese, and Urdu. There were worshippers there from China, India, Pakistan, the United States, Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and Argentina. Yes, it was a little slice of heaven.

Praise be to God for unifying us in Christ and to his Holy Spirit for giving us gifts of diversity.

Ahora entiendo un poquito mejor como será el cielo.

El Apocalipsis de San Juan es un poco repetitivo en este respecto, él siempre celebra la diversidad del cielo. Le gustaba describir a la gente de esta manera, "...apareció una multitud tomada de todas las naciones, tribus, pueblos y lenguas..."

Por eso suelo decir que ahora entiendo un poco mejor lo que será el cielo. El domingo pasado, la familia cristiana de Sure Foundation alabó al Cordero de Dios. Le adoraba en inglés, español, criollo, chino, y urdu. Había personas de China, India, Pakistán, Estados Unidos, México, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, Perú, Ecuador, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, Trinidad y Tobago, Haití, y Argentina. Sí, ahora entiendo un poco mejor como será el cielo.

El Domingo de Pentecostés

En el primer domingo de Pentecostés, la gente que se había reunido en Jerusalén exclamó: "...todos por igual los oímos proclamar en nuestra propia lengua las maravillas de Dios."¨ Ahora, unos 2.000 años más tarde, Sure Foundation volverá a celebrar la venida del Espíritu Santo a su iglesia hablando en lenguas. Los miembros de Sure Foundation van a leer en su "idioma del corazón" las lecturas de la Escritura en un servicio que se llevará a cabo en inglés, español, criollo, y urdo.

En el domingo de Pentecostés celebramos la unidad que tenemos en Cristo y los dones de la diversidad que Cristo nos ha dado. En ese mismo Espíritu, varias personas de diferentes partes del mundo van a confesar su fe común con nosotros. Ven, únete y lleve tu plato de comida favorito para compartir.

Sure Foundation va a celebrar el Domingo de Pentecostés el 29 de mayo a las 10:30am.

Pentecost Sunday

On the very first Pentecost Sunday, the people gathered in Jerusalem exclaimed, “...we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Now, some 2,000 years later, Sure Foundation will again celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to his church with some tongue speaking of our own. Members of Sure Foundation will read in their own “heart languages” readings from the Scripture in a service that will be done in English, Spanish, Creole, and Urdo.

On Pentecost Sunday, we will celebrate the unity that we have in Christ and also the gifts of diversity that Christ has given us. In that spirit, several people from different parts of the world will confess their common faith with us. Come, join us and bring your favorite food dish to share.

Sure Foundation will celebrate Pentecost Sunday on May 29 at 10:30am.

What Our White Board Says at Easter

There was no plan to write anything on the white board in our Bible study room that we like to call the Fellowship room.

As we were cleaning on Saturday in preparation for our Easter celebration, someone wrote Happy Easter on it with an exclamation point. A snowball started rolling down the hill. One of our Chinese members decided to write Happy Easter in Mandarin for all our of the Chinese speakers coming for Easter. Not to be out done, one of members grabbed a marker and wrote in French for all the French speakers who who would attend the next day. Then, one of our Honduran members grabbed a marker and wrote in Spanish (with his very best handwriting).

On Easter morning, people continued to share their joy. One member wrote Happy Easter in Japanese. Then, a new family shared their Easter joy in Tagalog, a language from the Philippines right after their baby boy was baptized.

When I saw what had happened on our white board, I had to smile. People had expressed their joy in Jesus' victory over sin, death, and the devil in a spontaneous, diverse, and personal way. They wanted people of their own language to read and hear the message.

SFLC Amazing Race pone a prueba nuestro conocimiento de los trenes y autobuses. Join us for the 3rd annual SFLC Amazing Race. Test your knowledge of NYC as you race in a friendly competition to see who will outsmart their competition to claim the top prize.

In SFLC's Amazing Race, we put our New Yorkers´ knowledge of the trains and buses to the test. Modeled after the popular CBS show The Amazing Race, teams involved will obey all laws, have fun, and use only mass transit to reach destinations throughout the city. In order to reach these destinations, teams are required to decipher clues and conquer challenges that eventually led to the next destination and finally to the finish line.

More details:

Cost: Only smiles and fun; the race is free.
Food: Light snacks will be provided before and after the race.
Bring: An unlimited metrocard
Teams: Each team is made up of two people.
Prizes: First and second place will receive small prizes. Everyone will receive a t-shirt that they are required to wear during the race.

Alcanzando al Mundo en Woodside, Queens

Volando todo la noche entera de Nueva York a Lima, Perú da un montón de tiempo para reflexionar, especialmente si usted no puede dormir en un avión.

Llegé en Nueva York de nuevo absolutamente convencido de que nuestro ministerio evangélico en Woodside, Queens, está llegando a los confines de la tierra. Cuando estaba predicando en nuestra iglesia en Lima, Perú, uno de mis estudiantes de Inglés, entró en la iglesia con una sonrisa en su rostro. Nos conocimos por la primera vez en Queens. Después de hacer la misa conmemorativa por un miembro de Queens, por lo menos diez personas se me acercaron y me dijeron: "¿Te acuerdas de mí? Yo estuve en su iglesia en Queens." De hecho, todas las personas con que tuve contacto en Lima, Perú durante el fin de semana me conocieron por medio de nuestra iglesia aquí en Queens.

Podemos estar relativamente una pequeña iglesia, pero Dios nos ha usado para cambiar los corazones y la vidas de personas en lugares tan distantes como Lima, Perú.

Reaching the World In Woodside, Queens

Flying over night from New York's, JFK Airport to Lima, Peru gives one plenty of time to reflect, especially if you cannot sleep.

I made a weekend trip to Lima, Peru, solely for ministry purposes. While in Lima, I visited with several families from our congregation in Queens, NY, carrying pictures and goods for loved ones. I attended the baptism of one of our members at one of our Lutheran churches in Lima, Peru. I had the opportunity to also preach at the same church. Finally, I had the joy to share the joy of Easter at a memorial service.

I walked away absolutely convinced that our Gospel ministry in Woodside, Queens, is reaching the ends of the earth. As I preached at our church in Lima, Peru, one of my English students, walked into the church with a smile on her face. We met first in Queens. After I did the memorial service, at least ten people walked up and said, "Do you remember me? I was at your church in Queens." In fact, all the people I had contact with in Lima, Peru over the weekend heard the gospel because we simply shared the good news with our neighborhood in Queens, NY.

We may be a relatively small church, but God has used us to change hearts and lives in places as far away as Lima, Peru.

Sure Foundation Featured on Single Fare

Recently, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church was featured in a blog post by the creators of the art show Single Fare: A Show of Small Works on Used Metrocards.

As part of our 10th Anniversary Celebration, Sure Foundation created a "Fellowship Mosaic" artwork as a celebration of the faith, community, and life of Sure Foundation. SFLC member Charis Carmichael Braun and artist friends Bill Bukowski, Jason Jaspersen and Karen Goetzinger have artwork in both the Fellowship Mosaic and the Single Fare exhibition. The Fellowship Artwork is available for viewing throughout the day during regular office hours or worship times. Come see it!

Sure Foundation to Partner with Karp Resources, Again!

Sure Foundation is partnering with the food consulting firm, Karp Resources, which handles technical support for the NYC Department of Health's Green Cart Iniative, to host vendor workshops this Saturday. Sure Foundation first worked with Karp Resources this past January.

The purpose of the Green Cart initiative is to place entrepreneurially-run produce carts in under-served communities in order to increase access to healthy foods. The workshop will serve to educate vendors on how to properly purchase, care for, and display their produce; how to partner with community-based organizations; and how to handle finances and record keeping so they can grow their business. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to support a program that strives to improve the health of NYC residents and our Queens neighbors.

Jail and Prison Ministry Presentation

Is there any hope for those in prison and jail? Will they ever change?

Mr. Mark Santelman of WELS Prison Ministries will present to Sure Foundation Lutheran Church during the English and Spanish Bible class hour on March 13, 2011. He will share stories about how America's hardest criminals are being changed by the Holy Spirit. He will also ask for help in bring Christ to Rikers Island inmates and their families.

The WELS Jail Ministry Training Team is an initiative funded by WELS Special Ministries and Prison Ministry to train WELS members for jail and prison ministry. We thank them for their prayers and encouragement.

Mr. Santelman shared this real letter from on inmate concerning the impact of jail ministry:

"Until I found Jesus - or rather until He found me, I hated all those around me. I was lost and very lonely and want to mesh out that pain to those around me - the pain that I was feeling. I had my own version of violence - I am a murderer - but when Jesus came into my heart I walked away from it all. I haven't done drugs or hated or hurt since that day. I was leader of the most violent gang here in prison for 12 years (been in prison 17 years.) Now I talk to those gang members about Jesus! Isn't that a wondrous story of the power of God's love through the Holy Spirit?!! RK"

En 2011, la temporada de Cuaresma comienza el 9 de marzo con el Miércoles de Ceniza y encuentra su culminación el 22 de abril con el Viernes Santo.

Sure Foundation utilizará los 40 días de la Cuaresma para ver de nuevo a nuestro campeón, Jesús, luchar por nosotros en su pasión. Realmente, la temporada de Cuaresma nos pone cara a cara con el mayor enfrentamiento de todos los tiempos. Durante la Cuaresma somos testigos de los campeones de ambos el mal y el bien. The Season of Lent @ Sure Foundation

In 2011, the season of Lent begins on March 9 with Ash Wednesday and finds its culmination on April 22 with Good Friday.

Sure Foundation will use the traditional 40 days of Lent to once again see our champion, Jesus, fight for us in his passion. Really, the season of Lent brings us face to face with the greatest clash of all time. During Lent we witness the supreme champions of both good and evil hold nothing back as each seeks with all his might to destroy the other once and for all. At Sure Foundation, while we watch this battle unfold, our eyes are focused on Jesus because our hopes of freedom and glory rest in him.

Wednesdays During Lent:

Beginning March 2, we are meeting at 7pm on Wednesdays at the church to consider the passion readings from the gospels. We will discuss these readings and apply them to our lives. The passion readings with discussion questions will be made placed in the bulletin for those who cannot attend.

El Yo Que Quiero Ser (Versión 2.0)

Todos tenemos cualidades en nuestras vidas que tienden a definirnos. Somos apáticos, codiciosos, egoístas, ansiosos....¿Cuál es el “yo” en cual regularmente nos colocamos? Pero, ¿Cuál es el “yo” que Dios quiere que yo sea - el “yo” que yo realmente quiero ser? ¿Podría notarse el cambio si yo pudiera acercarme tanto como pueda a ese "yo"?

Yo quiero ser mas generoso. Yo quiero ser mas compasivo. Yo quiero hablar más acerca de Jesús. Yo quiero ser mejor esposo, mejor padre. Cualquiera que este sea...tú no tienes que permanecer donde estas. Hay una mejora disponible; propulsada por Cristo. El proceso de corrección puede ser muy doloroso; pero valdrá la pena el resultado.

"Porque Te Amo" - Domingo de Confirmación

Sure Foundation celebró otro domingo de confirmación con el tema de Isaías 43:4. Pastor Tim recordó al pueblo de Dios que Dios usa las palabras "Te amo" con sinceridad y compromiso. De hecho, cuando Dios dice, "Te Amo", él promete sustituir por nosotros en Jesús y él promete que nos llame por nombre. Llamó a su pueblo por nombre desde los fines de la tierra para conocerlo mejor. Después del sermón, 11 personas adultas confesaron su fe en Jesús. Ellos vienen de países tan diversos como China, Honduras, Colombia, Perú, y por supuesto los Estados Unidos. El día nos muestra otra vez lo que Dios decía en Isaías, "Trae a mis hijos desde los confines de la tierra." (Isaías 43:6). De verdad, el nos ama.

BUT what is the "me" that God wants me to be - the me I really want to be? What would it look like if I could move closer to THAT "me." I want to be more generous. I want to be more compassionate. I want to talk more about Jesus. I want to be a better husband and dad. Whatever it is...you don't have to stay where you are.

"Because I love you..." A Confirmation Sunday

Sure Foundation Lutheran Church celebrated another Confirmation Sunday with the theme from Isaiah 43:4. Pastor Tim reminded God's people how God uses the words "I love you" with sincerity and commitment. In fact, when God says, "I love you," he promises to substitute for us in Jesus and he promises to call us by name. He called his people by name from the corners of the earth to know him better. After the sermon, 11 adult people confessed their faith in Jesus. They come from countries as diverse as China, Honduras, Columbia, Peru, and of course the Unites States. It just goes to show us that God means it when he says, "Bring back my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth..." (Isaiah 43:6).

Sure Foundation una vez más empezó la enseñanza de Inglés Conversacional. Nuestro programa se enfoca en enseñar los conceptos básicos de inglés para los que hablan lenguas extranjeras. La clave del éxito del programa es la agrupación de hablantes nativos de inglés con los que desean aprender inglés. En estos grupos, todos hablan en inglés sobre una variedad de temas. English Classes Remain a Felt Need in Woodside

This past week, Sure Foundation once again resumed teaching Conversational English. Our program focuses on teaching the very basics of English conversation to those who speak foreign languages. The key to the program's success is grouping native English speakers with those who wish to learn English. In these groups, the English speakers strive to have conversations about a variety of topics with their counterparts. For an explanation about our program.

We began teaching Conversational English almost a year ago. Attendance remains strong at the classes. In fact, we have recently capped the number of students in the class so that we can provide the best experience possible to those learning English in our classes. The classes will continue through the coming calendar year. Link to our class schedule.

Experience the Power of Light

Light is power. We feel it when we’re playing or working out in the sun. We see it as we marvel at how green and beautiful and lush our world is. We taste it in the food we eat and experience its energy as this food fuels us.

In this Epiphany season, the Scripture holds out Jesus as the Light of the world. He is the power to remove our sin and reconcile us to God. He is the power to turn unbelieving hearts into believing hearts. He is the power to help us overcome the darkness of our sinful nature. He is the power to open our eyes and see things differently, and not only see them differently, but actually feel differently about them. Join with us in experiencing the power of the Light.

El Año Nuevo: Un Servicio de Oración en el estilo de Taizé

Taize’ es una puebla Bélgica en la cual una comunidad cristiana sin denominación ha desarrollado un estilo de alabanza. Se caracteriza por oraciones que se cantan con estilo melódico y repetido.

Por 50 años, cristianos de todos partes del mundo han encontrado la paz y el sentimiento de comunidad en la alabanza de Taize’. En los EEUU muchas iglesias, incluyendo la nuestra la han usado.

Para entender bien el Taize’, es necesario darse cuenta al que la música y la letra pueden co-existir en la mente. Oración Taize’ lo descubrió y lo usa. Al repetir una frase simple muchas veces, la mente es capaz de mantener esa frase y otras distintas simultáneamente. En esta manera, nos unimos como comunidad con las frases cantadas mientras individualmente también se comunica a Dios. Quizás haya algo en las palabras de la canción en que se puede enfocar en su oración privada a Dios.

El estilo de Taize’ es menos formal que la liturgia de domingo, pero mantiene una estructura. Es común y normal que uno quisiera parar de cantar durante una oración cantada para una reflexión más intensa. Entonces la oración cantada sube y baja en volumen mientras personas entren y paren. El piano señalará el momento de empezar y parar. Se puede cantar con armonía. Taize’ es expresivo en muchos idiomas. Entonces, se puede cantar ingles y español a la misma vez sin problema.

New Year's Service of Prayer in Taizé Style

Taize’ is a town in Belgium where a non-denominational Christian community has developed a style of worship that emphasizes sung prayers which are melodic and repetitive rather than hymn-like or chanted.

During the past 50 years, Christians around the world have found peace and community in this kind of worship. In the United States, many Christian churches use Taize’ prayer, including some WELS churches and the WELS National Worship Conference.

It is possible for music and words to coexist or reside independently in the human mind. Taize’ prayer discovers and uses that. You may find that once your lips have repeated a simple line of words and music several times, that you can also harbor simultaneous yet independent thoughts. Use the sung words to join with the gathered community here and use your private thoughts to communicate with God. Perhaps your mind can find a kernel in the sung words upon which your mind can pray or mediate.

The style of Taize’ is less formal than a liturgy, while still structured. It is normal and expected that individuals may wish to stop singing during a sung prayer, perhaps for more intense reflection. It is normal for the sung prayer to build as more join and fade as more stop. The piano will lead the starting and stopping. Sing harmony if you wish. Taize’ prayer is expressive in any number of languages, and Spanish and English or any other tongue may be sung concurrently.

Lend a Hand event focuses on Acts 20:35

With the consumer excitement of the holiday season, the focus tends to be on the plethora of material items to be exchanged during the season. Perhaps this rush of spending and acquiring reaches a pinnacle in NY, NY. While millions of residents, immigrants, and tourists laden with bags bursting with goodies rush around the city absorbing the energetic marketing explosion that takes place each December, it is easy to overlook the hungry, downcast, and lonely that also share the address.

With Acts 20:35 in mind, the WELS mission in the borough of Queens, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church, presented an alternative way to prepare for the season with the "Lend a Hand" event last Saturday. Members, prospects, and passersby where invited to come in and lend a hand for those in need. Many accepted the invitation and put down their bursting bags to pick up a loom and knit a hat. Others assembled lunches and some sat down with their children to decorate simple star ornaments, write out holiday cards, and create large thank-you signs.

The finished hats are given to the local hospital, at their request, to distribute upon release to infants and babies that are treated in the emergency room and do not have adequate attire. The lunches, over 120 this year, are distributed at a local spot where needy persons tend to gather. Last year’s 80 lunches were gone in less than 20 minutes. In fact, last year we had cookies available for our volunteers, but the volunteers refused to eat them. Instead the volunteers packed the cookies into the lunches for the needy. The ornaments go to a local elderly home community, the cards get sent to soldiers serving overseas, and the thank you signs are on their way to the local fire and police stations. Of course, all items carry the church’s information with the hope that the persons reached out to may reach back.

At Sure Foundation, we have the gift of the Christ-child rooted deeply in our hearts. His salvation and his peace given freely to us make us, in turn, want to give freely of our time, talent, and treasure to others. We are thrilled that we are able to share this with our community and that, for the second year in a row, the community has been eager to join us.

This Christmas: God’s Love - Unstoppable

We have great respect for people who have a dogged determination, who set their minds to accomplish something great and won't allow anyone or anything get in their way. Yet, even the most unwavering grit and fortitude we see depicted in the heroes on the movie screen pales in comparison to the resolve God has to love us and rescue us from our sin.

We see this resolve in the manger on Christmas Eve, as the Creator of heaven and earth, determined to free this world from its slavery to sin, takes on human flesh and blood and enters the world he created. Yet, Satan was also determined—to counter God's plan in any and every way possible. And it's in this all out battle of the wills that we clearly see who truly is the greatest. In the end, absolutely nothing is going to be able to stop God's love.

Advent: LOVE / AMOR

Sure Foundation is preparing for Christmas with the installation of Advent "candles" - one at a time, each Sunday - in our front windows. The second candle, LOVE / AMOR shines.

The candles are made from transparent gels for theater lights. (With so many theaters in NYC, it was a fitting choice!) The words representing the meaning of each Advent candle are painted in both English and Spanish to be the "flame" and "halo." The transparent candles are resting on a "garland" of "pine boughs" cut from painted paper, set along the bottom of the windows.

A 10th Anniversary Perspective

He is the truth.

The year was 2000. My friend and classmate had just received calls to start an exploratory outreach mission in NYC. Pastor Gabb and I were doing all of the regular things and trying to do some irregular things. Although it was hard at times it felt great to be doing ministry to be doing what God had called us to do. One of the more frustrating moments came on what is the most joyous of days, Christmas. We were so excited about sharing the good news about the Savior of the world to the people of the world that we were reaching out to in Woodside, Queens. This particular time we sent out mailings to the neighborhood from a list we had gotten. We designed the invitation. We printed out all of the labels. Members of the church had put a good deal of time into the invitation. Then the first thing happened, the snow came and it came and it came. But that did not deter us we were still bound to have a service through which we could tell all of those people who received the invitation and came to Sure Foundation about the baby Jesus. The time for the service came and we had a total of one visitor. Olga, a lady from the neighborhood, had received our invitation but had only come because her church had decided not to have service that day. As a young mission pastor it was my first and possibly my toughest moment. I was disappointed at the lack of response. I was frustrated with the lack of numbers. I was mad at myself for not doing more or doing it better.

Fast forward ten years from that day. The church which we started, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church, asks me to preach for the ten year anniversary service. It would be my first time back since I left seven years ago. The theme for the sermon was 'God created something out of nothing: He makes the way, he is the truth and he gives life.' I had no idea how true it was that from the meager 2nd floor store front office/worship space to what is there now. When I got to Sure Foundation to prepare for the service, I was in awe at God’s work at Sure Foundation.

Sunday morning comes and I start greeting people some for the first time, an older woman comes up to me and asks if I remembered her. I had to say that I did not. She then proceeds to tell me the story from her perspective of Sure Foundations first Christmas service. As she tells the story I realize it is Olga. She ended up leaving her church because they no longer held to the Bible as God’s Word and started to twist passages in Scripture to fit their ideas. When she could no longer take being told that she was wrong for standing on the truth of Scripture she came to Sure Foundation. She told Pastor Olson that she had gotten their invitation. He remarked to me his shock because they had not done mass mailings for quite a while (probably due to somebody's ranting about them not being effective). She had the invitation from that Christmas service. She went through instruction and has been a member of Sure Foundation for two years. Praise be to God for the 10 years of ministry at Sure Foundation Lutheran Church and to all of those workers, called or lay, that worked and are working to preach the truth of the gospel.

On the first Sunday of October, in the year 2000, Sure Foundation held its first organized worship service in an apartment building in Astoria, NY. Twelve people attended the worship service and one dog. As the people gathered in that small apartment, there were hopes, dreams, and faith in our Savior.

God has blessed the ministries of Sure Foundation in his time and in his way over the past 10 years. Our hearts are so thankful for all that our God has done to preserve us in faith, life, and doctrine.

Over the next month, we will celebrate our 10 years of bringing the pure gospel to New York City and in particular, to Woodside, Queens. We will celebrate by remembering those teachings that are distinctly Lutheran: the "solas" of the Lutheran reformation.

Our worship service on October 3 will be the culmination of our 10th Anniversary celebrations. One of the founding pastors, Rev. Aaron Robinson, will be our guest preacher at a bilingual (Español/English) worship service at 10:30am followed by a reception with light refreshments, and a short slideshow presentation of SFLC's history. We will also unveil our finished "Fellowship Artwork" mosaic.

Under Jesus, One Family and One Church

Is it safe to say that most people like to be with other people who are like them? Maybe this is why certain neighborhoods in New York City are predominantly Asian, Latino, or other. Even church planters will tell you that you should really just reach out to one race of people because people just can't get comfortable with other races.

Jesus breaks down these barriers and more. He broke down race barriers in the Ephesian congregation between Jew and Gentile. The Apostle Paul wrote about the power of Jesus in Ephesus when he wrote that Jesus "...made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:14)." He has done the same for Sure Foundation Lutheran Church. In a service given in Spanish and English, a Peruvian youth (Dilara) was baptized and two Haitian men (Ostayne and Pierre) were confirmed in their Christian faith. Although our languages and cultures are different, under Jesus we are one family and one church. Praise be to God!

For anyone who loves baked goods, this past Sunday was one to remember at Sure Foundation Lutheran Church . Our kitchen was transformed for one day into a bakery of sorts. Dozens of cookies, cakes, and other morsels filled up our counter space. It was just like a chocolate factory or some sort of candy land!

The Christian family at Sure Foundation brought all these delicious goods for a good cause. We wanted to sell them to support Amanda Reyes' desire to receive a Christian education at Luther Preparatory School. Even though the baked goods looked delicious, it wasn't the baked goods that won the day. It was generous hearts. Inside the church, the goods were auctioned off with cakes going for up to $100.00 and cookies for up to $50.00. Outside on the sidewalk, our community joined in the fun. Cups of lemonade were sold for up to $20.00 and bars for up to $5.00. It was a day to remember that giving truly is better than receiving. We collected over $1,700 in the space of two hours!

Liszette Reyes, Amanda's mom, was blown away when she saw the generosity:
I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel towards everyone who donated their time, efforts and money to assist in paying for Amanda’s tuition to Luther Prep. It was an amazing feeling to watch an entire congregation stand together as one to make God’s plan materialize. Fifteen months ago I prayed to God on hands and knees to help me through my struggles and Pastor Tim rang my doorbell an hour later. I truly believe that God has led Pastor Tim to my door and has led me and my girls to Sure Foundation Lutheran Church. Pastor Tim and Pastor Dan have told me on more than one occasion that I have a family at Sure Foundation that cares for us and loves us very much, this was so evident yesterday. My deepest thank you to Amanda for organizing the bake sale, to everyone that stayed up late or woke up early to bake and to all who gave up their Sunday afternoon to make this all possible. God is truly AMAZING!!

Art in the Park: Hot, but a hit!

During the month of July, New York City was scorched! It was one of the hottest months on record, yet even during the heat wave New Yorkers headed out to their favorite parks for fun and relaxation. We joined New Yorkers in the park with the message of the gospel.

In order to beat the heat, friends and family of Sure Foundation Lutheran Church brought water balloons, crafts, and stories about Jesus to the Woodside community in Hart Park located at 65th Street and Broadway Ave. Kids swarmed our tables, played games, and eagerly listened to Bible stories about the hope we have in Jesus, our Savior.

This year two youth groups partnered with us in Woodside. For our first week of Art in the Park, Trinity Lutheran Church from Brillion, WI was here. For our second week of Art in the Park, Christ Lutheran Church from Denver, CO worked closely with us. We thank them from coming out to work with us!

Strokes of Genius!

Last Sunday, we painted our Metrocard tiles with Christian symbols. Everyone took up a brush and made a mini-artwork to fill out the mosaic (it's getting bigger every day!).
